Why Fish the Madison River

The Madison River is one of the most iconic trout streams in the West. Often called the “50 mile riffle,” it offers miles of oxygenated, structure rich water that holds strong wild rainbows and browns. From high country runs near Yellowstone to broad riffles above Ennis, it’s a river that rewards active anglers who like to cast, mend, and move.

Montana Trout Hunters guides key stretches of the Madison to match your goals and the season.

Fishing Seasons & Tactics

Early Season / Runoff

As flows allow, nymphing and streamers can be excellent.

Late June–July

Famous salmonfly and golden stonefly hatches, followed by strong caddis and PMD activity. This is bucket list dry fly fishing when you hit it right.

Mid/Late Summer

Caddis, PMDs, spruce moths, and hoppers. Dry dropper rigs shine, especially along banks and structure.

Fall

Baetis, October caddis, and aggressive browns that will chase streamers as water cools.
