Montana native. Decorated combat veteran. Lifelong angler. Master teacher. Your guide to unforgettable days on the river.
I’m Darrel DeLeon — a Montana native, and lifelong student of the fly-fishing sport. Over the past decade, I’ve fished on four continents and landed more than 60 species on the fly. I bring that hard-earned knowledge and global experience to every trip, helping my clients grow as anglers—whether they’re just starting out or chasing their next personal best.
After serving over two decades in the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force - including multiple combat deployments — I returned home to the waters that raised me. These rivers gave me peace, purpose, and perspective, and I started Montana Trout Hunters to share that with others.
Alongside my military career, I spent 24 years as a formal instructor, teaching everything from advanced space studies to operational leadership at the graduate level.
Teaching isn’t something I picked up — it’s in my DNA. Whether I’m explaining orbital mechanics or the perfect drift in a Montana River, my approach is methodical, clear, and built to meet you where you are.
Now, I guide fly fishing trips on the Missouri, Madison, and Land of Giants — helping anglers of all levels experience Montana the way it’s meant to be felt: through quiet mornings, clean water, and that electric pull when a trout takes the fly.
This isn’t just a business for me. It’s personal. Every trip is intentional, paced, and crafted around your goals - whether you’re casting for the first time, chasing your next personal best, or simply reconnecting with the river and yourself.
If you’re looking for a guide who’s also a passionate teacher, committed to making you a better angler and a more confident fisherman, I’d be honored to be part of your journey.

Montana is home to some of the most iconic trout rivers on the planet - and we guide on three of the best. Whether you’re drifting the deep channels of the Missouri, stalking pocket water in the Land of the Giants, or casting dry flies on the Madison, each river offers its own rhythm, challenge, and reward.
From headwaters to tailwaters, these fisheries are more than scenic—they’re soulful. And no matter your experience level, we’ll help you discover why anglers from around the world return to these waters year after year.
The Missouri River near Craig, Montana is a broad tailwater river and is considered by many to be a true Montana trout fly fishing mecca. The Mo, as the locals call her, is our home water and arguably the most consistent fishery in the Rocky Mountain West and productive wild trout fishery in the lower 48. This river is best described as a gigantic spring creek where the rainbow trout grow fast and strong, the brown trout become husky and cunning, and the backdrops are just as gorgeous as the fish.
The Land of Giants refers to a premier fly fishing section of the Missouri River just below Hauser Dam, extending roughly 3.5 miles to Upper Holter Lake in west-central Montana. This stretch of tailwater is famed for its abundance of trophy-sized rainbow trout and brown trout, with many fish measuring over 20 inches—and some pushing 25+. Because it's only accessible by boat, the Land of Giants sees less pressure than more easily accessed waters, preserving both the quality of the fishery and its wild, untouched feel.
The Madison River, flowing from Yellowstone National Park, is famous for its stunning scenery and great fishing. It joins the Jefferson and Gallatin Rivers at Three Forks to form the Missouri River. Passing through West Yellowstone, Ennis, and near Bozeman, it’s slowed by Hebgen, Ennis, and Quake Lakes. The Madison Mountain Range, home to Big Sky, provides a dramatic backdrop. This river offers one of Montana's most picturesque and productive fishing experiences.

Yes, a Montana fishing license is required. You can purchase one online or at a local retailer. We recommend buying your license in advance to avoid delays on the day of your trip.
Montana’s weather can shift fast - calm and sunny one moment, windy and drizzling the next. That’s why we recommend dressing in comfortable layers you can add or shed as needed. A moisture-wicking shirt under a fleece or light jacket, topped with a rainproof shell, will keep you ready for anything the day throws at you. Even if the forecast says sun, bring rain gear - weather on the river has a mind of its own.
Sunscreen is a must, even on cloudy days. The Montana sun at high elevation can be surprisingly intense. We also recommend a wide-brimmed hat or ball cap and polarized sunglasses to protect your eyes and help you see into the water. If we’re planning a walk-and-wade trip, waders and boots are essential. Let us know ahead of time - we can advise based on the rivers and the season.
We keep a few extra rain jackets and pants on hand in case you forget something, but it’s always best to come prepared with gear that fits well and keeps you dry and comfortable. And please, skip the jeans and cotton - they get heavy and cold when wet. If you have questions about what to bring, reach out. We’re happy to help you get dialed in for your best day on the water.
Gratuity is not included. While never required, tipping is a long-standing tradition in guided fly fishing. A 20–25% tip is customary for a job well done and a thoughtful way to show appreciation for your guide’s hard work, expertise, and effort to make your day on the water unforgettable.
Yes, you’re welcome to bring alcohol. We just ask that you drink responsibly.
We understand that sometimes plans change. If you need to cancel your trip, here’s how it works:
•Cancellations made 90 or more days before your scheduled trip date are eligible for a full refund of your deposit, minus any credit card processing fees.
•Cancellations made with less than 90 days’ notice will only be refunded if we are able to rebook your guide for the same date. Otherwise, the deposit will be forfeited.
•Cancellations made within 7 days of your trip, or failure to show up, will result in the full trip amount being charged.
We know unexpected things happen and we will always do our best to work with you when possible. For full details, please review our Refund and Cancellation Policy.
Absolutely. Our trips are family-friendly, and we’re happy to accommodate non-anglers who want to enjoy a day on the river. Please note that for safety and comfort, our drift boats are limited to 1 guide and 2 guests maximum. Just let us know at the time of booking, and we’ll work with you to tailor the experience for your group.
